When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka overall?

For a first trip from the UK, January to March is the single best window. The south and west coasts are dry and sunny, the seas are calm enough for swimming and whale watching, the Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya and Dambulla is at its most comfortable, and the whole thing overlaps with February half-term — handy if you're travelling with children. April is also lovely and adds the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations, though the heat builds and the odd pre-monsoon shower creeps in towards the end of the month. If those months don't suit, the good news is that Sri Lanka simply shifts its best coast rather than closing for the season.

When is the best time for the south & west coasts?

Aim for December to April. This is when the classic beach strip — Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama and Tangalle — is at its best, with dry days, gentle seas and reliable sun. It's also the window for whale watching off Mirissa (roughly November to April) and for the mellow beginner-friendly surf around Weligama and Midigama. Galle and its colonial fort make a lovely base at this time of year. From May to September the south-west monsoon rolls in and these coasts see more rain and rougher water, so if you're travelling in the UK summer you'll want to look east instead.

When is the best time for the east coast?

Head east from May to September. While the south-west is catching the monsoon, the east coast enjoys its driest, sunniest spell: Trincomalee and Nilaveli for calm, clear swimming water, Pasikuda for shallow family-friendly bays, and Arugam Bay for world-class surf that peaks across these months. When is the best time for the hill country and Cultural Triangle?

The hills and the Cultural Triangle are rewarding for much of the year, with December to March the most comfortable. Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella and the tea estates are cooler and greener than the coast, and the scenic hill-country train is glorious whenever the skies are clear. Pack a warm layer whatever the month, because upcountry evenings genuinely get cold — Nuwara Eliya can drop into single figures at night. The Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa is inland and drier than either coast, so it slots into almost any itinerary; just start early to climb Sigiriya before the midday heat. The hills follow a reliable daily rhythm in the wetter months — clear mornings, with showers tending to roll in during the afternoon.

What's the best time for whales, surf and safari?

Match the activity to the coast and month. For whale watching, Mirissa on the south coast runs roughly November to April, while Trincomalee on the east runs roughly May to September. Surfers follow the same split: the south and west breaks fire from November to April, and Arugam Bay takes over from around April/May to September/October. For safaris, the drier months of February to July generally deliver the best sightings of leopards and elephants in Yala and Udawalawe, with early-morning game drives beating both the heat and the crowds. If you're travelling in September, remember that Yala's main block usually closes for around a month, so Udawalawe or Wilpattu are the dependable alternatives.

When is the worst time to visit — and how to plan around it?

There is no truly bad month, only a wrong coast for the month. The least predictable windows are the two inter-monsoon periods, around October and again towards late April, when short, thundery showers can appear on either side of the island. Even then, rain tends to come in sharp afternoon bursts rather than all-day drizzle, mornings are frequently bright, and one coast is almost always drier than the other. The practical answer is to stay flexible with your route rather than avoiding these months altogether — the shoulder season often brings the best value and the thinnest crowds.
