Getting there: flights from the UK
Direct flights run from London to Colombo (CMB) in around 11 hours. One-stop routes via the Gulf and the Middle East depart from London, Manchester and Birmingham and are often the best value — handy if you're outside the South East. Flying is your single biggest cost, so it pays to be flexible on dates.
The visa: quick and online

When to go
Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite coasts, so there's nearly always good weather somewhere. December–April suits the south, west and Cultural Triangle (and lines up with Christmas, February half-term and Easter); May–September is east-coast season, perfect for the summer holidays. How long do I need in Sri Lanka coming from the UK?
Given the flight time, 10–14 days is ideal — long enough to combine the Cultural Triangle, hill country, a safari and the coast without rushing. Seven days works if you focus on one or two regions.
How far in advance should UK travellers book?
For peak season (December–April) book flights and a driver a few months ahead. Shoulder-season trips can be arranged with less notice.
Is Sri Lanka expensive for UK visitors?
It's excellent value. Your biggest cost is the flight; on the ground, a private driver, mid-range hotels and eating well are affordable in pounds compared with most long-haul destinations.
