The Cultural Triangle is the belt of ancient capitals and monuments in Sri Lanka's dry-zone north-centre, roughly bounded by Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy. It holds five of the island's eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites — more concentrated history than anywhere else in the country.
Distances between the big sites are short but the roads are slow, so this is a region that rewards having your own driver: you climb Sigiriya at first light before the heat and the crowds, then move on when you're ready rather than waiting on a tour bus. Most travellers pair it with the Hill Country to the south for the classic first week of a Sri Lanka trip.

How long you need in the Cultural Triangle
Three days is comfortable: one for Sigiriya and Dambulla, one for Polonnaruwa, and one for Anuradhapura, using Sigiriya or Habarana as a base. Add a fourth day if you want a Minneriya or Kaudulla jeep safari for the elephant gathering, or a slower morning at each site. With a private driver you can compress this if you're short on time — early starts make two ancient cities in a day realistic.
Getting here and moving on
It's a 4–5 hour drive from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Sigiriya, so many trips make the Cultural Triangle their first stop after landing. From here the natural next move is south to Kandy (about 2.5 hours, via the Dambulla and Matale spice gardens) and on into the Hill Country. Your driver handles the whole chain door to door.

Is the Cultural Triangle worth it?
If you have any interest in history it's the highlight of the island — five UNESCO sites in a small area, including Sigiriya, which is many travellers' single favourite place in Sri Lanka. Even without a deep interest in ruins, the Sigiriya climb and Dambulla caves are spectacular.
Can you see the Cultural Triangle in one day?
You can see Sigiriya and Dambulla comfortably in a day, but the full triangle (adding Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura) needs two to three. With a private driver doing early starts, a fit traveller can pair Sigiriya with Polonnaruwa in a single long day.
Sigiriya or Pidurangala — which should I climb?
Sigiriya for the frescoes, the mirror wall and the summit ruins; Pidurangala, the neighbouring rock, for a cheaper, rougher climb with the best view of Sigiriya itself. Many travellers do Pidurangala at sunrise and Sigiriya later — your driver can time both.
How far is the Cultural Triangle from the airport?
About 4–5 hours' drive from Colombo Airport (CMB) to Sigiriya. It's a common first stop on arrival — your driver meets you at the airport and takes you straight up.
