It's only in the last decade that the north has opened up for tourism, and it still sees a fraction of the visitors of the south. What makes the north different
The north is predominantly Tamil and Hindu, with its own language, festivals, architecture and food — palmyra toddy, hoppers, and Jaffna crab curry among the best meals in the country. The Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is one of Sri Lanka's most important Hindu temples, and its August festival is spectacular. It's a region best approached with curiosity and a bit of context, which a good local driver-guide brings.
Reaching Jaffna and fitting it in
Jaffna is a long way north — around 6–7 hours' drive from Colombo, or reachable via Anuradhapura in the Cultural Triangle (about 3.5 hours), which is the natural way to string it into a longer tour. There's also a train and flights, but a private driver lets you stop at Wilpattu National Park or the ancient cities on the way. Give the region two to three days to make the journey worthwhile.
